Art style

Gollum’s unique art style is a good thing

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum chose to use original designs rather than follow the movies, which could only add to the game’s appeal to fans.

When we think of the characters of The Lord of the Rings to base a game, Gollum is not the obvious choice. The character is neither particularly likable nor really a fighter compared to sympathetic powers like Aragorn. However, developer Daedalic Entertainment has decided that the little hobbit-like creature is perfect for its own title with The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.

The game has turned heads before, not only thanks to the focus on Gollum, but also the decision to focus on stealth gameplay. Interestingly, they also chose to design everything in the world from scratch rather than using the strengths of the Peter Jackson trilogy, a move that may actually work in the game’s favor.

One of the main reasons is the freedom it offers developers. If they chose to follow the artistic direction of the film trilogy, they would have little chance to innovate. This would lead to the game essentially showing locations and characters that players have seen before. This can work under certain circumstances and is often used in licensed movie games to connect the two different media. However, the game does not follow any events that occur in the film, and as such, Gollum travels through many landscapes that are never mentioned. While they can work to try and adapt these locations to the style of the movie, it could hamper any creativity they bring to the game world. The character overhaul also allows them to fit into their built world instead. than forcing them to do so. It also means that they can get the characters to act in a way their film counterparts wouldn’t without creating a disconnect for the players.

The Lord of the Rings was one of the greatest film releases in recent memory. Almost everyone has seen the movies at some point, and the perception of Middle-earth is synonymous with the movies. However, while this is a massive achievement, it means there isn’t much left to surprise anyone. Most players will know what an orc will look like or how an elf will dress. However, taking the option of rethinking everything means players have the chance to be surprised again. For example, the idea of what Mordor looks like has been colored by the media and recent games. This means the game has to show something different to stay interesting. The best way to do this is to completely rethink the world the player will see. Some things will inevitably be similar, as the books are very specific in some aspects, but they have a chance to reintroduce some of the sense of wonder that should be part of any foray into Middle-earth.

Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a game that tries something new in a well-known universe. The developer chose to make this story their own and show Tolkien’s universe with their own vision. Hopefully this choice allows players to relive the first feelings they had when they were introduced to The Lord of the Rings. Using a character like Gollum will also allow them to see a darker side of the universe from a much different perspective. This is an opportunity for players to simply leave Mordor, but it won’t be the one they recognize.

Developed by Daedalic Entertainment and published by Daedalic Entertainment & Nacon, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be released in 2022 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
