Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Fan Give Games Gen 2 Box Art Designs

A Pokemon Scarlet and Violet fan showed off artwork of the Gen 9 Legendaries on similar Game Boy Color boxes from the Gold and Silver era.

The art of the box for the Pokemon The series has changed over the years. Generation 1 began by featuring the final evolutions of starters in those games, with later entries featuring the main legendaries of that generation. As the Pokemon the series has changed, and so has the box art for the games.

Pokemon scarlet and violet have the simplest box art in the series so far. Now a fan has returned to the games classic art style by editing the new legendaries on Game Boy Color boxes similar to Pokémon Gold and Silver.

A Redditor by the name of CoffeeRacoon took the latest Legendaries, Pokemon Koraidon and Miraidon, and put them on Game Boy Color covers. Both versions feature their respective Pokémon and display them on a background that matches their version’s color, with Koraidon having a red background and Miraidon a purple background. The backgrounds were also scaled, which could be a reference to dragon scales. The illustrations of the two pocket monsters have also been washed out, matching the covers of older games. CoffeeRacoon’s work is a nice throwback to what gamers used to see when picking up a copy of a Pokemon Game.

The cover made by CoffeeRacoon received a positive reaction. A commenter mentions how much they love that the colors have been adjusted to be similar to the cover of Pokémon Gold and Silver, with another stating that CoffeeRacoon should try to create generation 2 style sprites of Koraidon and Miraidon. One user called the artwork amazing, saying they love these types of “de-make” box art designs. The art helps show that there’s still love for the classic style that many gamers grew up with.

CoffeeRacoon isn’t the only artist who’s worked the new legendaries in the art style of old game covers. A Redditor known as VAC7 drew Koraidon in the style of the pokemon red and green blankets. The coin features the two-tone background used by the Gen 1 covers and placed the new Legendary in the center of the box surrounded by text with the game’s logo placed over it. VAC7 made some slight changes to the Koraidon design to fit the classic Pokemon art style, like shrinking the “tire” that is in his chest. The artist also washed out the colors of the Pokemon art, matching the cover art of the first two generations. It’s an amazing throwback to the classic look the series had when it first started.

Pokemon scarlet and violet will be released on November 18 on Nintendo Switch.
