The last poster of sonic the hedgehog 2 serves as a fun reference for longtime fans of the iconic video game franchise.
Released alongside the latest trailer, the visual used for the live action poster pays homage to the original cover of the sonic the hedgehog 2 Game. Both pieces feature Sonic and his best friend Miles “Tails” Prower positioned in front of a giant red “2” while the sinister face of Dr. Robotnik peeks out from behind the number. While the original art is simpler in its aesthetic, the movie poster takes the visual and includes many other nods to the upcoming film, including the temple in the maze area.
While the reference is certainly a nice touch for fans, audiences can expect the movie to have a lot more Easter eggs dedicated to the sprawling sonic the hedgehog franchise. “[A]s we were kinda about to plot [the Sonic 2 movie]I think we were all thrilled to pull this great imagery that will have all fans excited when they see it on the big screen and create a cinematic version of what fans loved. [the games]said director Jeff Fowler. “It’s a big deal to have as many great Easter eggs as we can incorporate…I couldn’t even begin to list them because there are so many things that fans are excited about.”
Acting as a direct sequel to Blue Blur’s first live-action film of 2020, sonic the hedgehog 2 should further increase the speed. Dr. Robotnik returns to terrorize the world once more, discovering an ancient power source known as the Chaos Emerald. To secure the artifact, he not only creates another army of robots to defeat Sonic, but he also recruits Knuckles the echidna, who can take on the world’s fastest hedgehog. “You have the speed of Sonic, you have the super strength of Knuckles, and we just put them in an environment and let them be,” Fowler said. “It’s like a little Captain America [and] Iron Man; it offers so many opportunities in terms of fight choreography and action.
With Ben Schwartz, Jim Carey, Colleen O’Shaughnessy, Idris Elba and James Marsden, sonic the hedgehog 2 hits theaters on April 8.
