Tyeb Mehta’s Never-Auctioned Works to Debut at “Modern Indian Art” Sale

Two masterpieces by Indian modernist Tyeb Mehta will debut at the upcoming Astaguru Modern Indian Art Sale.

The auction, to be held on December 27-28, will also feature artwork by avant-garde Indian painters including MF Husain, FN Souza and Krishen Khanna, the online auction house said. .

“It gives us immense pleasure to present to our collectors such rare and unique works of remarkable artists including Tyeb Mehta, Rameshwar Broota, Ganesh Pyne, MF Husain, MV Dhurandhar, NS Bendre, FN Souza. The highlight of our auctioned among other works of art is the two Tyeb Mehta- lot # 14 and lot # 35 which are appearing for the first time in an auction, ”said Sunny Chandiramani, vice president, AstaGuru.

At the top of the auction are two works by artist Tyeb Mehta: “Figure With Bird” and “Diagonal”.

While ‘Figure With Bird’, an important masterpiece as it was possibly the first time Mehta incorporated the motif of a bird into her imagery, is believed to be ??14-16 crores; ‘Diagonal’, a large-scale work reaching almost 6 feet, is considered a defining moment in the artist’s practice as before that he was dedicated to painting expressionist works.

“With the ‘Diagonal series’, the artist embarked on a new method of painting with a flatter perspective. This change of style allowed him to accentuate the definition of the image and Tyeb Mehta finally arrived at his signature style .. Therefore, this lot presents a rare opportunity to acquire a painting from a very important phase in the artist’s career. ??12-14 crore, “Astaguru said in a statement.

Another key work in the sale will be an oil on canvas painting by master painter MV Dhurandhar whose works rarely appear at auction due to their rarity. The work, which should generate great interest among collectors due to its theme and size, is estimated at ??2 crore-2.5 crore.

Going Under the Hammer will also be a 10ft oil on canvas painting by artist Krishen Khanna. The color palette of the painting recalls the color composition adopted by the artist for his works on the theme “The Last Supper”. It will be offered at an estimate of ??1 crore – 1.3 crore.

A beautiful landscape work, ‘Manor House’, by FN Souza will also be presented in the auction. Estimated at ??3 crore-4 crore, the 1957 painting reminiscent of Victorian-style architecture professes Souza’s skill with lines.

A large-scale abstract landscape by artist Ram Kumar, estimated at ??5 crore-7 crore, is also part of the auction.

It will also feature five works by artist MF Husain, including a large-scale work depicting his interpretation of an important scene from the religious epic of the Mahabharata, inspired by the writings of various religions, which premiered in front of a live audience. .

Other works of art on display include an oil on canvas depicting a picturesque scene from the Indian countryside by NS Bendre ( ??1.5 crore-2 crore), a 1974 figurative work by Jehangir Sabavala ( ??3.5 crore-4 crore), a striking painting from 1987 titled ‘Man’ by Rameshwar Broota ( ??1.5 crore-1.7 crore), a rare large figurative nude work by revered artist KH Ara ( ??1,5 crore-2 crore) and a multimedia creation entitled “Pleasure Structure” by Prabhakar Barwe ( ??75 lakhs- ??85 lakhs).
